The True Story Of Amy Carmichael

Out of the mirror, two eyes peep. Every night before she went to bed, little Amy prayed for God to turn her brown eyes blue as she slept. The young girl wonders if God will finally answer her prayer! But when she wakes in the morning, finding she still has brown eyes, tears begin to fall. "Why doesn't God answer my prayer?"

As she grew older, she moved to the southernmost part of India to serve as a Christian missionary among the people of the country. It was common in India at the time for young girls of poor families to be given to the local Hindu temple and sold as prostitutes by the priests for money. Amy couldn't bear to let this happen and so she devoted herself to rescue these young girls and house them in whatever way she could. In order to save those girls, the missionaries she worked with did everything they could to fit into the culture. She even darkened her skin with coffee to further aid in her integration and assimilation into Indian culture.

Amy now understood why she had brown eyes. A blue-eyed missionary would have been an oddity that never could have truly fit in with the people. God knows that, far away in India, there are other children with brown eyes who need Amy's help. She was thankful that God had persisted in His intricate and elegant design instead of catering to the wishes of a girl who had not yet met her calling.

God always answers prayers by doing what is best!
